How to convert MKS to SRT

  1. Select your .mks file above. Every subtitle track inside it shows up as its own file.
  2. Remove the tracks you don't need. This step is optional.
  3. Click Convert to Srt.
  4. Download your srt files: one for every subtitle track.

You don't need to install anything, and it works on Windows, Mac, Linux and on your phone. You can also convert several .mks files at once: select them all, and every track of every file is converted.

What is an MKS file?

The MK in MKS stands for Matroska, the format behind .mkv videos, .mka audio and .mks subtitles. It's named after the Russian matryoshka dolls, that open up to reveal smaller dolls inside, just like the tracks inside a Matroska file. Fun fact: the name is slightly off. In Russian, "matroska" is a sailor suit, and the doll is a "matryoshka".

Programs like MKVToolNix and ffmpeg make .mks files when they save a video's subtitles as a separate file.

Most video players, TVs, phones and subtitle editors can't open .mks files, and you can't edit them in a text editor. Srt is a simple text format that works almost everywhere, which is why converting MKS to SRT is usually the easiest way to use the subtitles.

Every subtitle track becomes its own file

An .mks file can contain more than one subtitle track, for example English, Spanish and English SDH. Each track becomes its own srt file, named after its language, like Movie.en.srt and Movie.es.srt. Video players such as VLC, Plex and Kodi find these files automatically when they are next to your video.

Text subtitles: srt, ass, ssa and WebVTT

Most .mks files contain text subtitles: srt, ass, ssa or WebVTT. These are converted to srt right away. Styling that srt doesn't support, like fonts, colors and positions, is removed.

Picture subtitles: PGS and VobSub

Some .mks files contain subtitles from Blu-rays (PGS) or DVDs (VobSub). These types of subtitles contain pictures of text instead of actual text. This tool reads the text from the pictures with OCR, just like the sup to srt and sub/idx to srt converters.

After converting

To remove leftover tags, text for the hearing impaired or watermarks, use the srt cleaner. Are the subtitles out of sync with your video? Fix them with the subtitle sync shifter.
