Changelog

A picture of me

Hi, I'm Sjors 👋. I'm the creator of Subtitle Tools.

I still actively develop Subtitle Tools in my free time outside of work. I regularly add new features, fix bugs and do general maintenance.

Most new features I add are requested by users. If there's something you'd like to see changed or added, please don't hesitate to contact me.

6 September, 2024
  • Even more improvements to Blu-ray PGS parsing for the .sup to srt tool

  • More improvements to Blu-ray PGS parsing for the .sup to srt tool
3 September, 2024
  • Improved Blu-ray PGS parsing for the .sup to srt tool
    • Blu-ray PGS subtitles contain images that should be shown on screen. Usually these images are of text, in which case the end result pretty much like a normal subtitle file. I fixed a crash for when the person who made the subtitle was very creative (for example: for images like this and for images like this. Yes, these images are actually subtitles that you can enable/disable while watching the movie).
29 August, 2024
  • Added "remove line breaks" option to the srt cleaner tool
  • Various OCR improvements for italic text
28 August, 2024
  • Improved caching of sub/idx and sup subtitles
    • Cached sub/idx and sup subtitles are now stored in the cloud on Backblaze instead of locally on the server. Backblaze provides essentially unlimited disk space, which means we can keep cached files for years (they were previously only stored for 14 days due to disk space constraints). This should significantly speed up the sub/idx and sup converters as the cache fills up over time.
13 July, 2024
  • The subpicture batch status page now refreshes automatically
  • All files on the server are now compressed with zstd, reducing server disk space usage by an estimated 60%. When a user downloads a file it is decompressed on the fly.
10 July, 2024
  • Fixed an issue where 1300 subpictures (1,500,000 images!!) being uploaded at the same time caused an out of memory server error for other users
  • Fixed various issues caused by there being two orders of magnitude more images in the OCR queue than normally
6 July, 2024
  • Improved OCR results for the sub/idx and sup converters (specifically regarding music notes and square brackets)
2 July, 2024
  • New "multiple files at once" option for the Subtitle Merger
    • Previously you could only merge one file at the same time. If you wanted to merge a whole season you'd have to use the file once per episode, quite a hassle. This new option allows you to merge up to 100 files at once.
  • Add this changelog page
  • Improved how errors are displayed when using all tools
  • More aggressively delete input files to save disk space on the server
27 June, 2024
  • Always discard hidden files that MacOS puts in zip files (.DS_Store, __MACOSX, and others)
26 June, 2024
  • Add a dedicated "remove formatting" option to the Srt Cleaner
    • This option gives fine-grained control over removing fonts, bold text and italics from your subtitles. It was previously only possible to remove all formatting at once (using the now removed "remove everything between angle brackets" option).
9 June, 2024
  • Fix parsing .ass subtitles that have completely incorrect timestamp formatting
23 April, 2024
  • Automatically detect suggested language based on the file name of .sup and .sub/.idx subtitles
16 April, 2024
13 February, 2024
11 February, 2024
  • Completely overhaul how .sup and .sub/.idx subtitles are converted
    • I spent almost three months rewriting how the Sup to Srt and Sub/idx to Srt tools work. This effort made the tools at least 5 times as fast, and as a result the queue is now almost always empty (or at least reasonably long). In the past these tools were plagued with absurdly long queue times, that is now a thing of the past.
From 2017 until 2024
    • Subtitle Tools was created in January 2017 to fix subtitles for my then Chinese girlfriend (now wife). I haven't kept a changelog during this period, but I have been working pretty regularly on the site for the past 7 years.
